The Wettest County in the World

The Wettest County in the World is a 2008 historical novel by Matt Bondurant, an American writer who features his grandfather and two grand-uncles as the main characters in the novel. The book tells of the trio during the Depression and Prohibition in rural Virginia, who made a living bootlegging moonshine. The novel is told from both the perspectives of the three Bondurant brothers, mainly focusing on the youngest, Jack, and that of the writer Sherwood Anderson. He described Franklin County in that period as the “wettest county in the world” while working there as a journalist during Prohibition.[1] The 2012 film Lawless, directed by John Hillcoat, is based on the book with a screenplay by Nick Cave.

landingCoverWCBased on the true story of Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two granduncles, The Wettest County in the World is a gripping tale of brotherhood, greed, and murder. The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Howard, the eldest brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; Forrest, the middle brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father’s business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.
White mule, white lightning, firewater, popskull, wild cat, stump whiskey, or rotgut—whatever you called it, Franklin County was awash in moonshine in the 1920s. When Sherwood Anderson, the journalist and author of Winesburg, Ohio, was covering a story there, he christened it the “wettest county in the world.” In the twilight of his career, Anderson finds himself driving along dusty red roads trying to find the Bondurant brothers, piece together the clues linking them to “The Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy,” and break open the silence that shrouds Franklin County.
In vivid, muscular prose, Matt Bondurant brings these men—their dark deeds, their long silences, their deep desires—to life. His understanding of the passion, violence, and desperation at the center of this world is both heartbreaking and magnificent.

How to rebuilt 7.3L/3126B Powerstroke injectors

Powerstroke Injector Poppet Valve Info

Arguably the biggest problem with high mileage Powerstroke injectors is wear on the popit valve seat. On high mileage engines and engines that have not had proper maintenance and oil change intervals the popit valve face and seats will start showing excessive wear. There are a lot of theories on how to correct this but the only true solution is replacement of the injector.

As the popit valve seat wears the popit valve sinks further and further into the injector body. As it does this the armature that is affixed to the top of the popet valve moves further and further away from the solinoid and closer to the plate (or adaptor) afixed to the top of the injector body. On a new injector there is only .004″ clearance between the armature plate and the top plate. So as you can inmagine there is not much room before they will come into contact.

As the armature plate sinks lower the solinoid that magnetically grabs and lifts the plate has a harder time lifting it and you start to run into runability issues like rough idle etc. In theory this can be corrected so that the solinoid will again be able to lift the plate by machining parts of the injector.

It’s a nice theory and all and it does bring the armature plate back into spec in relation to the solenoid so that it can properly lift it. However it creates other problems and doesn’t fix the actual issue to begin with. If you machine the bottom of the top plate to correct this you run a high risk of the armature plate hitting the solenoid. There are only a cople of thousandths of an inch clearance so if you machine much of anything off the top plate they are very likely to hit.

If you do something to lower the upper seat you are limiting the amount of travel that the popit valve has. The popit valve only moves a few thousandths and if you take even .002″-.003″ off the travel that will equate to 20% or more restriction in travel. That means less oil can pass through the valve and push fuel into the engine. This may not be a big issue for stock or slightly modified injectors however when you are trying to get large volumes of oil in the injector to flow a lot of fuel reguardless what your ICP is you are going to restrict the amount of flow.

And still this hasn’t done anything to address the real problem. The real problem is that the seat and valve are worn far beyond tollarance. As the valve sinks further into the seat it will start sticking causing more runability problems. If you rebuild the injector and try to machine to get the armature clearances back in spec the popit valve and seat will only contine to wear and cause more problems down the road. The ONLY way to properly fix this problem without replacing the injector is to resurface the valve seat and the valve face much like on an intake or exhaust valve in a head. Then machine the proper parts of the injector (which is NOT the adaptor plate) to bring the rest of the tolerances in spec. However noone makes a tool to machine the seat or face leaving the only way to properly fix this problem is to replace the injector.

At GTS Motorsports we do not recomend nor do we even bother to try to fix this problem. We will not compramise the quality of our injectors just to save some money over replacing the injector with a new one. We would rather only send quality parts out the door and possibly loose some sales than to compramise our quality by trying to correct a problem that can’t be properly corrected to try to save some money.

Webinar: implementing technology…

HPF_04-2015-webinar
by Todd Dawson, Caterpillar Fatigue Practice Manager

A major hurdle in managing fatigue and distraction is that it is often difficult to see and measure. With the advent of new fatigue detection technologies, we now have direct line of sight into the scale and source of fatigue in an operation. In-vehicle alert systems can wake a sleepy driver before an imminent crash. Data from an actigraphy band can tell you when your employees are best fit for duty. However, implementing new technologies designed to detect and predict fatigue without a thoughtful change management plan is certain to deliver less than desirable results.

Caterpillar’s Fatigue Practice Manager Todd Dawson, a fatigue science expert with 20 years of experience building Fatigue Risk Management Systems, will explain a systematic approach for successful implementation of risk-mitigating technologies.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the sources of fatigue
2. Explore available fatigue technologies
3. Understand the key aspects of effective implementation of fatigue technology
4. Recognize the benefits of properly managing the change

Group concept

Mission:

The repair of a group does not consist in the replacement of only the damaged parts that compose it. it is the awareness of the substitution of shares in anticipation of an imminent damage, due to their wear.
The ability to predict a break is a function of an analysis technique that relates the real-time operation of the component, and the quality of the individual parts that compose it: except that there have been no design errors on the part of the brand.
The duration of operation of each component is always due to a period of maintenance in order to allow for proper use and appropriate duration: the higher the value of the component the greater attention that falls on it and hence the quality of the individual parts that make up the set.
The creation of the groups from the conceptual point of view and commercial aims to provide the customer or to repair the complete view of the spare interested in a possible replacement. It’s not the only benefit for the producers of spare parts to it is the vision that the manufacturer prior to the end user to transmit that will face an expense in anticipation of a repair.

Description:

The group is a set of parts that satisfy the quality conditions, mechanical and physical properties necessary and sufficient to the composition of a component in order to ensure the functioning of a machine. They can also be created for the sole purpose of facilitating the installation by the end customer who can follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for proper installation. This is to reduce the time of commissioning. Can be created in order to indicate which of them are usable parts from the brand or by the manufacturer; or which are present in the market competition in order to provide the end customer a preventive vision of availability in the domestic market. The group is identified with the suffix “GP” to the item that describes eg “BEVEL – GP” (pinion and gear).

Coding and classification:

The group is encoded as if it were a single spare part. Correspond to it information about the size, the packing, the weight and the amount of the prices of individual parts that compose it.

Dismantling and assembling:

The group, at the discretion of the manufacturer, can be supplied entirely. The component parts must always be usable and where required sold individually.

Picture:

The manufacturer provides an illustration of the group and its composition with a clear indication of what are the parts that make it up and which accessory parts indicated only in order to indicate the location of the component.
The group is shown in 3D isometric perspective and shows the list of spare parts. The list shows the number of codified parts identified in numerical order corresponding to the illustration which depicted the group itself.

Printing:

The print format is adopted standard A4 structured in one or more pages giving precedence to the illustrations and the following list of parts.

Service kit: gender groupings:

Any other parts that are not shown in the drawing as seal kit or kits bearings are indicated at the end of list at the discretion of the manufacturer according to the needs of use. In this way every time you looked at a list, in the bottom of the list of component parts, there may be a list of other spare parts: the so-called kits.
The parties grouped in kits will be marked with a symbol next to the alphabetical coding. The same symbol is shown next to the coding of the kit which is part of it.

Information access:

The manufacturer allows the direct and free access to information of the spare parts and groups.

Certification and compliance:

The individual parts are part of a group comply with the originals and are adaptable individually if they were used in other groups. The manufacturer has an obligation to produce, within 30 days from the date of request, quality certified parts sold. In the case of assembling a group, within 30 days of the request, the manufacturer will have to produce a certificate has been installed in accordance with the specifications given by the brand.

Origin & labeling:

The label of each part must include: encoding; description; quantiy, weight; origin.
If the goods are not from the Community, the manufacturer is required to produce simultaneously with the transport document a statement of origin.

Warranty:

The commercial sale of a “group” protects the customer for at least 2 years warranty after delivery unlike the individual parts that are guaranteed 12 months. The manufacturer has the skills, the tools and the means to offer the customer the component up and running to perfection.

Core exchange:

The manufacturer may pay the customer a 30% discount (core deposit) for the core received provided it meets certain minimum conditions of acceptance. This only then the whole group is sold with the exchange of core.

Sale and availability:

The individual parts that make up the group are serviceable and available up to a term of two years from the sale. The manufacturer undertakes to produce for himself an amount necessary and sufficient whereas in a short future the same group may have to be revised or double-checked. In the time interval covered by the warranty, if not on stock of the manufacturer, the defective parts are replaced with the original from the brand at the expense and charges not paid by the customer.

Drive a Volvo machine with 5G mobile technology
